Many organizations are recognizing that uncoordinated implementation of SOA can lead to many of the same problems that plain old point to point interfacing created. Some have come to the conclusion that if the definition of the message payload were derived from a common, unambiguous ontology, that their messages would be consistent, and rather than mapping from endpoint to endpoint, they could map from endpoint to the core. This tutorial will briefly outline the business case for ontology driven SOA, present a methodology for achieving this, and present the results from a case study where this was achieved on an aggressive timetable. \nAt the conclusion of this tutorial participants will:\n
\n
Be able to describe the business case for basing a Service Oriented Architecture on an enterprise ontology
\n
Be able to outline the steps needed to build an enterprise ontology of sufficient scope to support the message building process
\n
Be able to outline the steps needed to define and shape services and messages based on a combination of business event analysis and the ontology
\n
Understand some of the patterns and tradeoffs that need to be resolved in order to map from the open world assumptions of the ontology to the closed world assumptions of traditional systems
\n
Be aware of tools that can be used to aid in various stages in the process
\n
Understand how basing your SOA on a shared ontology opens up opportunity for integrating unstructured and external information with an organization's internal systems
\n
