DESCRIPTION:Click for Latest Location Information: http://semtech2010.semanticuniverse.com/sessionPop.cfm?confid=42&proposalid=2818\nAs the query language of the Semantic Web, SPARQL is a key foundational technology to finding answers and building software based on the Semantic Web. This hands-on tutorial will teach you everything you need to know to be proficient in SPARQL, from the ground up. No previous knowledge of SPARQL is assumed. \nIn the tutorial, we'll use real queries that can be run against real data on the Web to learn about the structure and features of SPARQL; how to create, evolve, and debug queries; and how to run queries against SPARQL endpoints around the Web. The tutorial will cover all of the details of the SPARQL standard and will also discuss common extensions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the new features in SPARQL 1.1, including:\n
\n
SPARQL Update
\n
Aggregate functions
\n
Projected expressions
\n
Subqueries
\n
Negation
\n
Property Paths
\n
\nAttendees are encouraged to come with their laptops so that they can experiment with SPARQL queries as the tutorial goes along. \nThe tutorial will cover: \n
\n
How to run SPARQL queries against endpoints on the Web
\n
The basic structure of SPARQL queries
\n
How to query for optional information
\n
How to query for alternatives
\n
How to query multiple data graphs with a single query
\n
How to use SPARQL built-in functions to handle multilingual data
\n
The 4 types of SPARQL queries: SELECT, CONSTRUCT, ASK, DESCRIBE
\n
How to query for data that is not there (negation)
\n
SPARQL and keyword search
\n
SPARQL and aggregate functions/grouping
\n
Shortcuts to write more readable and maintainable queries
\n
\nThe publicly available data sets that we will work with include: \n
\n
FOAF: Individual people's data scattered across the Web
\n
DBPedia: A Semantic Web version of Wikipedia
\n
Jamendo: Data on music artists, albums, and songs
\n
GovTrack: Data on the U.S. Congress
\n...and more\n
\nThis session is designed for people with little to no experience with SPARQL...Plus, it will be fun!
